🎯 We will be migrating to a new server because https://toot.community will be shutting down. We are considering hosting our own instance (seems like overkill) or moving to https://mastodon.nl Does anyone have a good suggestion for other options?
And FYI - If you have an account there and haven't yet migrated to a new server, don't procrastinate. https://social.jorijn.com/@jorijn/statuses/01KYN00AP3NCZXCFB96KQB8GN2
@internetarchiveeurope This really makes you think: for an institution as crucial to digital preservation as the Internet Archive to rely on third-party instances for its Fediverse presence is a bit of a paradox.
You don't need to hunt for another general-purpose community like mastodon.nl, just spin up a single-user GoToSocial instance. It's lightweight, written in Go, consumes minimal resources, and gives you complete control over your ActivityPub keys without depending on anyone else's goodwill or risking another shutdown.
snac is also a great option (and littlefedy when released, though I haven't tried it yet so I can't vouch for it directly).
Let me know your new home, I'll follow you.
Or maybe consider joining a server like social.coop where you become a co-owner.
Theres a few.
Could then direct the resources youd put into running your own instance into keeping things functioning well.
social.coop has been pretty successful. Has depended on a number of members being happy to give their time and skills to keep things running and moderated, but the "mission" has, over the years, attracted a steady flow of people willing to step up and theyve held things together nicely
@dazinism @internetarchiveeurope that's a good idea too. Being a lone wolf, I'm not so much into communitarian things, so I didn't think about that.

@internetarchiveeurope I can confirm that hosting your own Mastodon is very tough on resources if you're just hosting a single account.
I migrated to GoToSocial, which is very easy to host and has handled thousands of followers easily. The docs are top-notch.
Get started transferring soon, though: Mastodon's automatic migration tools are finicky and they often don't move folks on the first try, and there's a 30 day cooldown period between attempts.
